“I believe that over the next five years, the developmentf of the green-energy economy can drived this nation’s comeback,” the Democratic governor said at the generap session ofPV America, whic h is being held at the Pennsylvania Conventionj Center in Philadelphia through Wednesday. The conference is the first by the to focus solely on photovoltaicsolar energy, which comes from photovoltaic panelw that convert sunlight into electricity. It’s being held in conjunction withthe IEEE’as 34th Photovoltaic Specialists Conference at the Philadelphia Marriotr Downtown, which is adjacent to the convention from Sunday through Friday.

About 3,000 people are attending the the SEIA and IEEE said. Twenty eighft states, including Pennsylvania and New and the District of Columbia have alternativeportfolioo standards.
Rendell said he’d like the federal standarde to have minimum figures that statez could exceed ontheir own. “Itf we do those things … I thinkm there’s no reason that America can’tf be the dominant nation in solar energyg forthe world,” he said. Rendel said alternativwe energy will drivethe U.S. economy for the next 25 yearz just asthe information-technologu and life sciences industries have drivejn it for the last 25. Undet his leadership, Pennsylvania has moved to capitalizee onthat shift. In 2004, it established an alternatived portfolio standard that requires 18 percent of energh sold in Pennsylvania to come from alternativew sources of energyby 2020.
Last Pennsylvania created a $650 million renewable energg fund. Of that money, $180 million is to go to solae energy, consisting of $100 million for grants and rebates to cover up to 35 percen t of the costs incurred by homeand small-business ownerw who install solar energy systems, and $80 millionh for grants and loans for solar economic-development projects. More than 300 applications forsolard economic-development projects were received by the deadline last week, Rendel l said. Philadelphia also has gotten in onthe renewable-energy act. Mayor Michael Nutter in April by 2015. The city is one of 25 takingf part in the federal Departmentof Energy’w Solar America Cities initiative.
